Why Japan? The Story Behind the Setting
Japan has been the single most-requested Forza Horizon location for years and Playground Games knew it. The team chose Japan specifically because they felt the technology had finally caught up with their ambitions. As art director Don Arceta explained, they wanted to accurately represent Japan without technical limitations getting in the way.
The result is a map that captures what the developers call the “unique culture” of Japan a place of dramatic contrasts, where neon-soaked urban sprawl meets ancient mountain roads, cherry blossom forests, and rugged coastlines. The game doesn’t try to recreate Japan with satellite-level accuracy. Instead, Playground’s goal was to capture the country’s spirit and essence, working with cultural consultant Kyoko Yamashita who has lived in and driven extensively across Japan to make sure the approach is both authentic and respectful.
The world also reflects Japan’s famous seasonal changes, from cherry blossoms in spring to snow-covered passes in winter, each season dramatically reshaping the landscape and driving conditions.
The Map Tokyo, Touge Roads & Legend Island

The Forza Horizon 6 Japan map is the most dense and vertically varied in the series to date. Here’s a quick breakdown of what you can expect to explore
Tokyo City is the crown jewel described as the largest urban area ever in a Forza Horizon game, five times larger than the urban zones in previous titles. Within Tokyo you’ll find distinct districts, each with their own identity neon-lit downtown streets, suburban neighborhoods, industrial docklands, and iconic landmarks like Shibuya Crossing, Ginko Avenue, and Tokyo Tower.
Beyond the city, the map opens up into mountainous rural roads built for the kind of Touge battles that feel straight out of Initial D. Winding passes, tight hairpins, dramatic elevation changes this is where JDM legends come alive.
Then there’s Legend Island an exclusive region of the map that only unlocks once you’ve earned your Gold Wristband. It’s packed with unique events, exclusive tracks, and areas that reward the most dedicated drivers. Getting there is a genuine achievement, not just a progression checkbox.
Cars 550+ Vehicles Including JDM Icons

Forza Horizon 6 launches with over 550 real-world cars one of the largest launch rosters in Horizon history. The list includes fan-favorite JDM classics alongside modern hypercars and everything in between.
The cover car is the 2025 GR GT Prototype, making its video game debut in Forza Horizon 6. A race-derived road car combining motorsport performance with road-going engineering, it’s the perfect ambassador for a game set in Japan’s legendary car culture.
Other highlights include
- 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser the second cover car, representing iconic Japanese off-road heritage
- A deep roster of JDM fan favorites with remastered engine audio and upgraded steering animations (up to 540 degrees of wheel rotation)
- Forza Edition cars with extreme modifications, found through exploration
- Aftermarket Cars rare vehicles you can test drive and potentially buy as you explore the open world
Car audio has been completely overhauled using new acoustic modelling technology that simulates real-world soundscapes meaning every engine note, surface rumble, and gear change sounds more convincing than any Forza title before it.

How the Campaign Works Tourist to Legend

Forza Horizon 6 introduces a fresh campaign structure. You don’t start as a racing superstar. You don’t even start as a rookie. You arrive in Japan as a tourist and you have to earn everything from the ground up.
Your goal is to qualify for the Horizon Festival, which requires completing the Horizon Qualifiers. From there, you rise through the ranks by earning Wristbands the returning progression system from the original Forza Horizon. Each Wristband tier requires you to prove yourself through events that get progressively faster and more demanding:
- Horizon Showcases return in their classic form spectacular set-piece races against unlikely opponents
- Horizon Rush is brand new thrilling obstacle course events tied to iconic locations across Japan
- Touge Battles head-to-head mountain pass duels rooted in authentic Japanese car culture
Reach the Gold Wristband and you’ll unlock the invitation to Legend Island, where the most exclusive events and challenges await.
Outside of the campaign, Japan is yours to explore freely. A Collection Journal tracks every car, house, landmark, mascot, and point of interest you discover turning exploration into its own satisfying loop.
The Estate Build Your Own Corner of Japan
One of the most talked-about new features in Forza Horizon 6 is The Estate a customizable mountainside property in rural Japan that’s yours to design and build freely in the open world.
This isn’t just a cosmetic feature. The Estate functions as a creative space where you can construct custom structures, set up unique car showcases, and build layouts that can be shared online with the community. It’s Forza Horizon’s most ambitious property system to date, blending the collector fantasy with genuine creative tools.
You’ll also unlock multiple garage homes across Japan, each serving as a fast travel point and a showcase space for your collection.
Soundtrack & World Audio
Forza Horizon 6 is shipping with more music than any previous Horizon title, with a particular emphasis on Japanese artists woven into the soundtrack alongside international acts. The goal is the most diverse Horizon soundtrack ever recorded.
Beyond the music, Playground conducted extensive field recordings across all four seasons in Japan, capturing the real sounds of the country from the ambient noise of Tokyo’s streets to the wind through mountain passes to build an environmental audio layer that makes the world feel genuinely alive.
Multiplayer & Co-op
Forza Horizon 6 is packed with multiplayer options for every type of player

Why Forza Horizon 6 Is a Must-Play in 2026
Let’s be straight Japan was the right call. The setting gives Playground Games everything they needed incredible visual diversity, iconic car culture, a deep well of authentic locations, and the kind of roads that make every car in the garage feel worth driving.
The tech is there too. The map density, the seasonal system, the audio overhaul, the 550+ car roster, and the expanded multiplayer tools all point to a team that has spent years working out exactly what they wanted Forza Horizon 6 to be.
For casual players, Game Pass makes this one of the easiest day-one decisions of the year.
